Says government is keen on establishing more facilities across the State

The State government was keen on creating more new courts, construct court buildings, and set up other infrastructure facilities to ensure speedy justice to the litigant public. The government has allotted ₹659 crore in the recent past for this purpose, C. Ve. Shanmugam, Minister for Law, Courts and Prisons, said here at a function to lay the foundation stone for the construction of law chambers, meeting hall and dining hall for lawyers at the district court campus in Salem on Sunday.

During the former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s term between 2011 and 2016, 223 new courts were sanctioned across the State, of which 150 had already started functioning.

The present regime in the last eight months ordered the creation of 195 new courts. The list included creation of 115 special courts, including special courts for banks and financial institutions scam, mahila courts, and judicial magistrate courts in 51 blocks.

Work progressing

The work on the construction of integrated court complexes is progressing at 11 towns, including Tiruppur, Sattankulam, Tenkasi, Thanjavur, Sivakasi, Sengam, Sriperumpudur, Chidambaram, Rajapalayam.

Of the ₹659 crore, the Centre’s share was ₹155 crore, he said.

The government was evincing keen interest to ensure that all the courts in the State functioned on their own premises. Owing to the sincere efforts of the government, more than 86 % of the courts were functioning in their own buildings.

Already the functioning of the Madras High Court had been computerised at an outlay of ₹ 1.88 crore.
